What is Vastu?
Vastu is an ancient science which lays down certain Astrological rules and regulations about the direction, construction, designing and decoration of a house for the benefit of the occupants. The recommendations are based on certain rules & regulations, perfected over hundreds of years by our great Sages. Origin of Vastu
The Vedic origins of Vastu-shastra can be traced to the shape of 'AUM'. Lord Ganesha, the God of Learning, has always been associated with the primordial sound and word 'AUM' which is considered to be omniscient and omnipotent. Vastu-shastra is a super science. It evolved some 5000 years ago in India. It deals with practice of architecture and building/construction, but it touches every facet of life on this earth and the universe. The ever present link between man and the cosmos is the basic theme of Vastu. Vastu principles provide guidance for making optimum use of cosmic energy to achieve cosmic harmony. Pyramids, mirrors, bells, gems, precious stones, metals, colors, yantras, trees, flowers serve as catalysts in re-establishing the connection between man and the divine energy. There are certain parallels between human beings on earth and creation of the universe by the Ultimate Creator. A building enclosing the space is supercharged with eight elemental forces, the quintessence of which is Vastu which takes material form. The house is a living organism with active foundations of the four gross elements at corner zones with the primal element of space (energy) acting at the center.

Basic Vastu Rules

• The plot and the dwelling must have North-South length greater than the East-West width
• The North-South geometric axis of the plot and the dwelling should match with the geomagnetic axis.
• In a room or a house, all the heavy loads should be concentrated in South, West, and Southwest directions.
• The North, East, and Northeast directions should have maximum number of doors, windows, or any other openings.
• Openings in the South, West, and Southwest directions should preferably be blocked.
• Place Vastu in the Southwest zone of a plot with excess site margins/open spaces towards North and East directions.
• Ground slopes should incline from South to North and West to East, thereby making South & West zones relatively heavy.
• As far as possible, doors and all window openings should be placed towards North and East.
• Openings towards West & South zones should be minimum possible.
• Roofs should slope towards East and North, placing West and South points at a higher level.
• Kitchen should be located in Southeast zone with the cook facing East.
• All heavy loads and huge cabinets should be placed in relative South and West zone of a room.
• Additional floor should be constructed in Southwest or South or West zone with terraces towards North & East.
• South and West side walls should be constructed in heavy stone masonry.
• Plot, Vastu, and individual rooms should have North-South length greater than the East-West width.
• In commercial establishments - top executive should have offices in SW, legal & accounts in SE, finished products in NW, library and relaxation rooms towards NE.
• Vastu-dosha (deficiencies/defects/flaws) can be remedied by applying basic concepts from Yoga, Astrology, Ayurveda, and Science.
